Central China

Nee how all

We are at the internet again this morning for several reasons: 1. to hear from home 2. we begged off from the museum not because of museum burnout but from foot weariness 3. it costs 50cents an hour and 4. it’s too early to drink beer which costs 25 cents for a very large stubbie. So thanks for your emails. Yesterday was big. We walked to the inner city wall which dates from the Ming dynasty and cycled 13.7 kms around it, then meandered home via shops and gardens. Having been to China a couple of times before means that most of the cheaper souvenirs aren’t new and the beautiful expensive ones are out of reach. Pam is the only shopper so far. We also climbed 100s of steps up Big Wild Goose Pagoda and that night we walked to and from a Tang dynasty theatre performance. It was one of those shows where the audience is mostly foreigners and there is a line up of huge buses outside but it was excellent in music, dance and costuming. Very professional. The dumplings for dinner were amazing, each course being in the shape of an animal. For example the fish were like fan-tail goldfish with green peas for those big protruding eyes. I just wanted to see the kitchen and those hundreds of fast-moving hands. So anyway after who knows how many kilometres we are footsore. Fortunately we are not braindead yet and after being away only a week are hungry for more. Seven out of the nine people in our group have been to China before at least once. Pam and David are the only China virgins. However after today it is new for everyone. The small group gives you the freedom to choose what you want to do, which suits us very well. So tonight we train off into the unknown. Keep well and up beat.
