Diabetes has become a disease of epidemic proportions. Approximately 940,000 Australians over the age of 25 already have full-blown diabetes. And the International Diabetics Institute projects an estimated 1.23 millions Australian with diabetes by 2010. Diabetes is the #10 cause of death in Australia, and it’s destined to move up the charts pretty quickly, given the way we eat. It’s hard to believe, but the average Australian scoffs down over 50 kilos of sugar a year!

Type 2 (also called “adult-onset”) diabetes is an extremely common problem with potentially serious consequences. Individuals who suffer from it have increased risks of heart attack, vascular disease, kidney failure, cataracts, retinal damage, and accelerated aging. And, even more frightening, it’s estimated that at least one-third of us have a genetic tendency to develop the disease.
