Mature Aged Workers

The Answer to Australia’s Skills Shortage

We have all heard it before, Australia’s population is ageing. What effect will this have on the Australian economy? The answer is simple, according tho the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) between now and 2016 over 85% of all new employment growth will be in the plus 40 age group. The ABS says that only 7% of new employment growth will be in the 35 years and below. This opens up a world of opportunities for experienced workers around the country.

Many mature aged workers have reported levels of discrimination by employers. There is a real feeling out there that many employers simply are not interested in hiring an experienced worker. In fact PLUS40 commissioned some research by well-respected independent economic forecaster BIS Shrapnel that found nearly 50% of the population believed that employers have a ‘used by date’ for job seekers and that age was 50. If this is true, these discriminatory attitudes will have a major impact on businesses of all sizes. It is time that employers woke up and lost the ‘use by’ date.

We are out there helping to educate employers on the many benefits of employing experienced workers. We are also explaining to them that their attitudes must change, considering what the ABS forecasts are. We are finding that many employers are beginning to ‘wake up’ and lose the use by date attitude.

Businesses are now wanting to recruit people who can mentor their younger staff, who can better relate to their customer base and who are generally more committed, focused and reliable. They are beginning to realise that it makes sense to hire an experienced worker who is more likely to stick around rather than a younger person who traditionally moves jobs far more often. PLUS40 offers employers a full online recruitment service. PLUS40 is also free for employers to join, place job advertisement, search the database for candidates and access the many business resources and links we have provided.
