There is one organization that doesn’t believe in any of that and it is spreading rapidly across Australia. So if you’re a woman of 50 or over and you’re tired of feeling unnoticed, here is a hell of a solution.
The Red Hat Society is for women who are serious about having fun and celebrating life after 50.
If you’ve been somewhere and noticed a group of mature women decked out in red hats and purple outfits, who are having a really good time, it’s a fair chance that you have bumped into a Red Hat Society get together.
Described by members as a “disorganized organisation’ of women, the Red Hat Societymembers are anything but invisible. Founded in America (surprise, surprise), in 1998 and rapidly spreading across Australia, the Red Hat Society has certainly struck a cord with those women who don’t wish to be quiet and unobtrusive for the rest of their lives.
The Statement of Purpose, written by the Founder, Sue Ellen Cooper, states “The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and élan.
We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and since we are all in it together, we might as well join red gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Under the frivolity we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for where ever life takes us next.”
The motto that members are encouraged to live by states “ Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming “Wow, what a ride”
